Wolaita Zone Administration

Wolaita Zone is one of the bigest Zones in Southe Ethiopia regional government and is located between 6.29-7.100 N & 37.13 0 -38.08oE. The boundary areas are Central Ethiopia region in the north, Sidama Region in the East, Gamo and Gofa zone in south, South West Ethiopia region in the west and Oromiya Region in North East. Total Area of the Zone is 451,170 hectare or 4511.7km2. The zone is structured with 16 Woredas and 7 Town Administrations with a total of 364 kebeles, among which 289 rural and 75 urban kebeles.

There are 3 agro - ecological zones, out of which ‘Dega’ accounts 9%, ‘Woina Dega’ accounts 56 % and ‘Kola’ 35 %. According to the land usage reported by zone Agriculture department of 2015 E. C total cultivated land is 284,191.2 hectare (64.8%) and among this 283,124.2 hectar is held by annual crops, 1070.9 hectar by perinial crops, 40,409 hectar is grassland, 83,803 hectar is forest, 10,685.7 hectar is covered by water, 62,474.5 is arable land, 12,936 hectar is unarabable and the rest is used for other purposes.

According to data obtained from department of Agriculture and natural resource there are 433,545 agricultural households and 1,300,635 farmers benefited from Extension progames by 2,090 extention workers. The number of Agricultural extension beneficieries exceeded household size because there are beneficieries who are not registered as ahouseholds.
Concerning social services, there are 9 governmental and 3 private hospitals in the zone, 68 health centers, 359 health posts. In Education sector, there are 526 Primary schools (grade 1-8), and 82 secondary schools (9-12).Concerning the student’s number 464,629 primary students were enrolled in government schools and 108,928 students were enrolled in secondary government schoolsin the year of 2015 E.C.
As of 2015 E.C the total Permanent a number of public servants in Wolaita Zone were 53,062 out of which 34,188 or 64.43% were male 18, 874 or 35.56% were female.
